Baron isn't your typical, energetic two year old. He doesn't fidget, doesn't make a fuss, and has a maturity beyond his age. The proud way in which he holds himself, and his smooth gaits lend him an elegance that you might expect in a senior horse. But don't be fooled into thinking he has no spirit, he has just learnt that wasting his energy is just that - a waste. This colt has a sharp mind on him. While other horses display he watches everything around him. He picks things up quickly, and once he has learnt he very rarely forgets.
Baron enjoys his space, and isn't overly sociable with either other horses or people. He tends to stay separate from the other horses in the pasture and is certainly not the first to approach visitors although he won't run or go wild when approached either.
He can be a little stubborn in hand, not one to rush but preferring to take his own sweet time about things as he takes in the environment around him although he is more responsive and forward with a jockey on his back.

Closer/Variable
Before a race, Baron is his typical self - calm, collected. While he will be taking in the environment around him, and is clearly not just plodding along, he isn't excitable or up on his toes. He canters nicely to the gates and loads like a pro with no fuss or attitude.
Baron is one of those rare horses with a truly variable racing style and will adapt to the field around him with guidance from his jockey. He is intelligent, and works with rather than against his rider which is what enables this adaptability. The one thing which is predictable about how he will race is his start - he invariably gets a good start, not that of a solid front runner but enough to put him toward the front of the group - but where he goes from there is dependent.
In a race without leaders, Baron is likely to pick up his speed and take the front spot. Without feeling the need to duke it out for first, he can set a moderate pace which is easily maintained and save stamina for the finish. Even when he does this, he does not rely on having a solid lead coming into the stretch. His calm demeanor sets him apart from most front runners and allows his jockey the luxury of setting up the race how they feel it will run best.
In a race which is particularly front heavy, he is more likely to drift toward the back of the field. Baron enjoys watching his opponents as they run and getting a measure for them. If anything, a closer position is his most natural style as he will sit back happily without letting the field slip ahead before going wide and powering up the final few furlongs using his strength and massive spirit to power him home.
In some races, he will even just drift in the mid field. In such races, he does not tend to take a solid mid of preceder position but drift between the two - close enough to the front of the field not to let the other horses slip away but far enough back not to get entangled with the crowd which can form with preceders and stalkers behind the leaders. In these races, he will start to move up the field about half way through the race before firing down the stretch.
